《烏鴉小屋》 Rookery Nook
這個重演1920年代英國喜劇的舞台劇需要許多門和一個兩層樓的建築。這個室內設計是由許多弧線構成的,讓它有一種令人愉快但奇怪的感覺。建築原本是全黑的,也因此叫「烏鴉小屋」,不過格楚德用黃色讓屋子顯得清新一點。當然,她用太多黃了。牆上掛的圖都太大了,門上的櫻桃圖樣是仿造洛可可的裝飾,但也畫得很不專業。
建築物的牆是用紙和紙板做的,門和窗戶也是。傢具不是買的就是用黏土做的。階梯是用廣告板和紙做,而扶把是用珠珠和針做的。外面院子的草和樹叢是用鮮苔做的。
A revival of the 1920s english farce, the play requires many doors and a two-level building. The architecture consists of various curves, giving the interior a joyful yet strange appearance. The building originally was all black, thus named "Rookery Nook," but Gertrude tries to lighten it up with yellow. But of course, she overdoes it, and now everything's too yellow. Oversized paintings hang on the walls, and the cherry plant designs on the doors are meant to imitate rococo decorations, yet done in a very crafty way.

《領導者》
The Leader
角色們在地上串來串去,對領導者的出現既興奮又緊張。廣播員看著領導者的出沒,為地上的人物報告。然而,當領導者終於現身時,他們發現他竟然沒有頭。
這 個戲講的是人們對政治的無知。我的舞台設計也用視覺表達這一點。領導者走的舞台有著高級的紅幕布,從高得誇張的地方掛著。領導者出現前,幕布只拉起一點, 讓觀眾只看到他的腳。相反地,其他人物的空間則像個垃圾場。地上噁心的形狀是個迷宮,將人物困在其中,無法逃脫。那些形狀隱隱的寫著「IDIOT﹝白痴 ﹞」。最後,當領導者要出現時,幕布拉起,而我們看見一個很假的佈景,和一個無頭人。地上人物一直期望的一切都只是個巨大、虛偽的謊言。

庭園設計
Garden Design
教授將一張平面圖發給我們,要我們依照平面圖設計一個庭園。平面圖裡包含一個露天陽台、有窗和門的房子的外面、一個野餐桌、和一個烤肉架。我們需要選擇一個造型來設計庭園。
我的設計應用日式/亞洲式庭園的主題。我將餐桌變成一塊平坦的石頭擺在池塘邊,而烤肉架則成一個瓮。模型是用廣告板做模型盒,紙板做房子和陽台,苔蘚做植物葉子,黏土做石頭、魚、和瓮,還有白膠做池塘裡的水。

以香菸建蓋的要塞,雖然看似可以保護自己不被外面世界的火焰灼傷,但其實城牆本身也都易燃。戒掉香菸,看似危險困難,但在那道牆的背後,可以看得到生命的晴天。
The fortress you've built with cigarettes, though seemingly can protect you from the inferno of the outside world, is actually inflammable itself. Quitting smoking may appear difficult and even dangerous, but as soon as you cross over to the other side of your tobacco wall, you'll be able to see how sunny life could become.

我正和我的朋友夏天聊天。當我轉過身看電視時,夏天又剛好在電視上。她在電視上的眼睛很突兀。因此,我設計了這套眼睛服裝。在裙的底端有兩隻大眼睛吊著,布製眼皮的開闔可以被演員用鐵絲操控。兩個瞳孔是以鏡面材質做的;這樣觀眾可以在眼睛裡看見自己。這個點子的來源是我在夢裡跟夏天本人講話,又在電視上看到她。演員的眼妝要和裙上的眼睛一樣。
I was talking with Summer, my friend, and when I turned to watch the television I saw her on it. Her eyes stood out a lot when I watched her on the machine. Therefore, I designed the Eye Costume. At the skirt two huge eyes will hang, and they can be opened and closed by the actor via the wires attached to the fabric eyelids. The pupils of the eyes will be made of a reflective material, so that the audience would be able to see themselves in the eyes. This idea came from the fact that I saw Summer on television and was simultaneously talking to her in person. The eye makeup of the actor should mirror the eyes on her skirt.

我記得一個在2010年8月做的很奇怪的夢。夢裡我爬上一個很高的大廈,結果發現它是個大船。在大船/大廈快撞上一做島嶼前,我跳到水裡,但我在水裡時差一點被大船/大廈輾過。大船/大廈的水泥底從潛在綠水裡的我的頭上駛過。我抬頭看就看到它的底。我依據這個夢設計了長髮公主的服裝。公主做在高掛的鞦韆上。她服裝的上半身是標準的公主裝,但下半身延長到地上成一座塔。裙的最底部散出去成水的樣子。她可以被看做是一個舞台元素。
I had recalled a weird dream I had in August of 2010. I climbed into a super tall skyscraper and found that it was a large ship. I jumped off the building/ship as it was about to crash onto an island. When I was in the water, I was almost run over by the building/ship. The concrete base of the building/ship sailed over me while I was submerged in the foggy green water. I looked up and saw the underpart of the building/ship. I designed a Rapunzel costume based on this dream. On a flown structure, Rapunzel would sit. The top part of her costume would be of a standard princess costume, yet the underpart of her skirt extends down and becomes a structured tower. The very bottom part of her skirt flares out and becomes the water. She can be seen as a set piece.

A simple, brief, yet funny dream. While I was waiting in the car for my dad to take me swimming, I made myself a robe a la Francaise. Therefore, I designed a rococo-style costume for the sea goddess, taking elements of the ocean and using them as parts of her dress. The exaggerated tall wig is actually a fish, and she has a ship perched on top of it. Kelp become the lace of her collar, and sea anemone become her engagements. Her necklace and stomacher are an upside-down squid, her back fullness is a man-of-war, with its tentacles hanging down. Her wide dress with paniers is a giant clam, and barnacles decorate the bottom of her underskirt. Finally, codfish shoes, starfish earring, pearls, and a diver-flipper fan finish the look.

Somebody was doing makeup and she used a lot of layers of different shades. Her face was like a white canvas and she was doing art on it. I had just seen Death of a Clown at the Phoenix Theatre and decided to use this idea to design the Clown costume. The whole Clown and his costume would be stark white, even his body, and pieces of see-through fabric would be patched onto his pants and hat to create the layered look I saw in the dream.

我夢到我回到高中時代。我和同學在練一個歌舞表演─我們圍成一圈,在圈圈的一端有一個開口代表著河的出口。我站在開口那一端,唱著最後的高音。那是一個很原住民的表演。河的開口讓我想起《耶兒瑪》的舞台設計,我以我想,「如果我把《耶兒瑪》背景設在台灣某原住民部落裡會怎樣呢?」我做了點研究,最後選了布農族,因為他們以八部合音、宗教習俗著名,也有分支成很多不同的部落﹝像戲裡异教徒和城裡的人﹞。
I dreamed that I was back in high school, and we were doing a sing-and-dance piece where we form a circle and there was an opening which represented where a river flows out, and I stood where the opening was, singing the last high note. It was a very aboriginal performance. The opening with the river reminded me of the Yerma set, and I thought “what if we place Yerma in the setting of one of the aboriginal tribes in Taiwan?” I did research and picked the Bunon tribe, because they are known for their complicated choir harmony, their various rituals, and how they had branched into many tribes (Pagan Woman and the townspeople).

Therefore I designed a costume where the actor would be in a full black leotard, black wig, and black mask/face veil. The costume, however, would be made with see through material of colourful, light fabric.

I was looking at a drawing of a girl in a dress with rectangles and circles all around her. The dream reminded me of Cubism, and so I designed a structured costume of geometric shapes. The set would also be of geometric shapes.

In the dream, I was going to sign my name on a drawing, but I couldn’t find the right black marker. This dream reminded me of the importance of markers and outlining in my drawings. I decided to design The Life Inside with the concept of completed and uncompleted looks. The dead girl is outlined but uncoloured; her family is fully outlines and coloured; everyone else is roughly pencil sketched.

馬羅維茲的哈姆雷特 The Marowitz Hamlet
因為《馬羅維茲的哈姆雷特》是原版莎士比亞《哈姆雷特》的拼貼作,它的服裝設計也是各個年代服裝的拼貼圖。為了讓各個不同造型的服裝能結合在一起,顏色和服裝上手繪的花樣成為很重要的設計元素。這些服裝雖然大致是正確的年代服裝造型,但也有些卡通化和超現實化。這一點表現出這齣戲展露哈姆雷特發癲過程中腦裡的混亂。
Because The Marowitz Hamlet is a collage of the original Shakespearean Hamlet, the costume design becomes a collage of different fashion periods in history. To bring the different fashion styles together, colour schemes and hand-painted patterns become important elements of the costumes. The designs are meant to be somewhat period accurate, yet somewhat cartoon-like and surreal; this reflects the fact that the play is presenting the chaos that is going on inside Hamlet’s mind as he gradually loses his sanity.

經典莎士比亞之作《羅密歐與茱麗葉》,兩位從對立的家庭出生的青年的悲劇愛情故事,已經以不同的年代和世界背景被重演無數遍。這項作業以英國擺動的60年代的時尚造型設計服裝。凱普萊特家族富裕又重視藝術,並對同樣富裕但古板老套的蒙特克家族有所厭惡。
The classic Shakespeare piece Romeo and Juliet, a tragic love story between two teenagers from opposing families, has been redone again and again in different periods and different worlds. This project is to design the costumes of Romeo and Juliet with the styles of England in the Swinging 60s. The Capulets are a wealthy artistic family who loathe the equally well-to-do yet uptight, old-fashioned Montagues.

猜 Guess
Hiding behind a pebble, beside a bag of garbage, I am a clover.
Every morning, a mysterious millionaire would pour a pot of gold onto the bag of garbage, and he would never forget to throw some to me.
I guess he is the Tangerine of the Sky, filling everybody’s hearts with juicy sweetness.
A short while after, a choir group on the tree branches would sing passionately.
I guess they are angels in colourful robes, descended from the heavens to celebrate the birth of another day.
It is in this joyful atmosphere that the busy drummers would add beats with the tapping of their feet on the ground. Some drummers create swift, vigorous rhythms filled with energy; others slow and powerless, as if still longing for sleep. Some strong and consistent, some rushed and capricious. One by one, they appear from that end of the street...
...and disappear from this end, layering their music with ups and downs.
I guess they are hurrying to catch the Train of Happiness, heading towards the romantic lands of their dreams.
The gold melts, and the sweet juice runs out. The Tangerine of the Sky shatters into numerous twinkling beads, embroidered onto a screen of dark purple chiffon.
The choir group on the tree branches hums a smooth melody...
...and the drummers appear from this end of the street...
...and disappear from that end.
I guess somebody had turned down the volume of the world. Everything is serene and peaceful.
Suddenly, a roar comes from this end of the street, breaking the silence.
As I am still trying to guess what is happening, the bag of garbage beside me all of a sudden leaves the ground and is carried onto a yellow truck, which disappears from that end of the street.
Surprised and confused, I can only guess that it is on its way home to unite with its family.
I guess tomorrow the millionaire would again pour gold down from the sky...
...the angels would again sing their beautiful songs...
...and the drummers would again catch the Train of Happiness in pursuit of the romance in their dreams.
And I, a clover, hiding behind a pebble.

《三文錢的歌劇》是1920年代編劇貝爾托‧布萊希特和編曲庫特‧威爾的傑作。本齣劇是為了諷刺當代其他的歌劇,並傳達兩位作者的想法。布萊希特思想的主軸就是以戲劇做為政治工具。這齣「乞丐為乞丐寫」的歌劇背景設在倫敦蘇荷區,是關於當地一位惡名昭彰強盜的捕捉與釋放。
當我聽著《三文錢的歌劇》的歌時,它強烈噹啷的節奏讓我想起中國的京劇。因此,我研究京劇不同角色化妝的臉,發現每一個顏色和臉都代表著不同的特徵和個性。有了這些資料,我開始了設計流程,將歌劇裡的人物給予不同的京劇臉。
Threepenny Opera, written in the 1920s by playwright Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill, is a satire on contemporary operas as well as a vehical to convey the ideas of its two creators. Using theatre as a political tool is the central theory of Brecht's works. Set in Soho, London, the piece is an opera "by beggars for beggars," and focuses on the capture and pardon of notorious bandit Macheath.
While I was listening to the music of Threepenny Opera, the strong beats and clunkiness of the songs reminded me of traditional Chinese opera. Therefore, I researched the different face makeup of Chinese opera characters, and discovered that every colour and face represents a different characeristic or personality. This begins the design process, assigning different colours and faces to each of the characters in the musical.
