The Leader

Characters scatter around the floor, feeling both excitement and anxiety for the appearance of the Leader. An announcer keeps his eye on the whereabouts of the Leader, reporting to the characters on the floor the Leader’s status. However, when the Leader finally walks out, they find that he is headless.
The play is about the ignorance and blindness of some people during political events. My set design tries to present this issue with visuals. The stage in which the Leader walks about is an expensive proscenium with lavish red curtains that hang from way too high up. Before the Leader is revealed, the curtain is only slightly raised so that only the legs of the Leader are visible. Contrasting with the extravagant stage, the floor area where the characters run about is like a dumpyard. The disgusting, undefined shapes on the ground serve as a maze in which the characters try to escape from, yet cannot seem to really do so. Also, very subtly, the shapes spell out the word “IDIOT.” Finally, when the Leader is to be revealed, the curtains come up, and we see a fake painted backdrop, and the headless Leader. Everything that the characters have been anticipating is a gigantic, heavily disguised fraud.
