眼睛 Eyes

我正和我的朋友夏天聊天。當我轉過身看電視時,夏天又剛好在電視上。她在電視上的眼睛很突兀。因此,我設計了這套眼睛服裝。在裙的底端有兩隻大眼睛吊著,布製眼皮的開闔可以被演員用鐵絲操控。兩個瞳孔是以鏡面材質做的;這樣觀眾可以在眼睛裡看見自己。這個點子的來源是我在夢裡跟夏天本人講話,又在電視上看到她。演員的眼妝要和裙上的眼睛一樣。
I was talking with Summer, my friend, and when I turned to watch the television I saw her on it. Her eyes stood out a lot when I watched her on the machine. Therefore, I designed the Eye Costume. At the skirt two huge eyes will hang, and they can be opened and closed by the actor via the wires attached to the fabric eyelids. The pupils of the eyes will be made of a reflective material, so that the audience would be able to see themselves in the eyes. This idea came from the fact that I saw Summer on television and was simultaneously talking to her in person. The eye makeup of the actor should mirror the eyes on her skirt.

我記得一個在2010年8月做的很奇怪的夢。夢裡我爬上一個很高的大廈,結果發現它是個大船。在大船/大廈快撞上一做島嶼前,我跳到水裡,但我在水裡時差一點被大船/大廈輾過。大船/大廈的水泥底從潛在綠水裡的我的頭上駛過。我抬頭看就看到它的底。我依據這個夢設計了長髮公主的服裝。公主做在高掛的鞦韆上。她服裝的上半身是標準的公主裝,但下半身延長到地上成一座塔。裙的最底部散出去成水的樣子。她可以被看做是一個舞台元素。
I had recalled a weird dream I had in August of 2010. I climbed into a super tall skyscraper and found that it was a large ship. I jumped off the building/ship as it was about to crash onto an island. When I was in the water, I was almost run over by the building/ship. The concrete base of the building/ship sailed over me while I was submerged in the foggy green water. I looked up and saw the underpart of the building/ship. I designed a Rapunzel costume based on this dream. On a flown structure, Rapunzel would sit. The top part of her costume would be of a standard princess costume, yet the underpart of her skirt extends down and becomes a structured tower. The very bottom part of her skirt flares out and becomes the water. She can be seen as a set piece.

海洋袍 Robe a la ocean

一個簡單、短、但搞笑的夢。當我在車裡等爸爸帶我去游泳時,我幫自己做了一件法式袍。就這樣,我為海女神設計了一件洛可可樣式的服裝。我用海洋裡各種物體做為她裙上的不同部位。誇張的高假髮其實是一隻魚,而一艘船被擺在上面。水草變成她領子的蕾絲邊,海葵則成她的袖子裝飾。她的項鍊和三角胸衣是一隻顛倒的烏賊,而她背後的布料是一隻觸腳向下掛的僧帽水母。她被籃子撐起的寬裙是一個巨大的貝殼,而藤壺裝飾著她內裙的下面。最後,她還有鱈鞋、海星耳環、珍珠、和一個蛙鞋扇子。
A simple, brief, yet funny dream. While I was waiting in the car for my dad to take me swimming, I made myself a robe a la Francaise.
Therefore, I designed a rococo-style costume for the sea goddess, taking elements of the ocean and using them as parts of her dress. The exaggerated tall wig is actually a fish, and she has a ship perched on top of it. Kelp become the lace of her collar, and sea anemone become her engagements. Her necklace and stomacher are an upside-down squid, her back fullness is a man-of-war, with its tentacles hanging down. Her wide dress with paniers is a giant clam, and barnacles decorate the bottom of her underskirt. Finally, codfish shoes, starfish earring, pearls, and a diver-flipper fan finish the look.

《小丑之死》的小丑 Death of a Clown’s Clown

有一個人在化妝,而她用了很多層次。她的臉向是一張空白畫紙,而她在上面作畫。我才剛看完鳳凰劇場演的《小丑之死》,所以決定用這個點子設計小丑服裝。小丑和他的服裝會是全白,連身體也一樣。一片片半透明的布會布滿他的褲子和帽子製造出我夢裡的層次感。
Somebody was doing makeup and she used a lot of layers of different shades. Her face was like a white canvas and she was doing art on it.
I had just seen Death of a Clown at the Phoenix Theatre and decided to use this idea to design the Clown costume. The whole Clown and his costume would be stark white, even his body, and pieces of see-through fabric would be patched onto his pants and hat to create the layered look I saw in the dream.

腿 Legs

一個女孩在跳繩,而我只看得到她的腿。我覺得一個只看得到演員的腿的戲應該會很有趣。觀眾須依據人物的腿來猜他們是誰。演員的上半身是全黑的。
A girl was skipping rope and all I can remember of her were her legs.
I thought it would be fun to design a show where only the legs of each character would tell the audience who the characters were. The top part of the actors would be covered in black.

布農族的《耶兒瑪》 Yerma of the Bunon Tribe

我夢到我回到高中時代。我和同學在練一個歌舞表演─我們圍成一圈,在圈圈的一端有一個開口代表著河的出口。我站在開口那一端,唱著最後的高音。那是一個很原住民的表演。河的開口讓我想起《耶兒瑪》的舞台設計,我以我想,「如果我把《耶兒瑪》背景設在台灣某原住民部落裡會怎樣呢?」我做了點研究,最後選了布農族,因為他們以八部合音、宗教習俗著名,也有分支成很多不同的部落﹝像戲裡异教徒和城裡的人﹞
I dreamed that I was back in high school, and we were doing a sing-and-dance piece where we form a circle and there was an opening which represented where a river flows out, and I stood where the opening was, singing the last high note. It was a very aboriginal performance.
The opening with the river reminded me of the Yerma set, and I thought “what if we place Yerma in the setting of one of the aboriginal tribes in Taiwan?” I did research and picked the Bunon tribe, because they are known for their complicated choir harmony, their various rituals, and how they had branched into many tribes (Pagan Woman and the townspeople).

人類《馬達加斯加》 Human Madagascar

我夢到《馬達加斯加》,所以我覺得把電影變成人演的舞台劇會很好笑。我用服裝暗示角色是什麼動物和個性怎樣。
I dreamed about Madagascar. Therefore, I thought it would be funny to design costumes for people, but still indicate the type of animal they are and their personalities in the movie.

影子上的顏色 Colour on Shadow

我忘了我夢到什麼了,只記得顏色─清淡、快樂的顏色,和墨黑色。我設計這一套服裝裡,演員穿著黑色的緊身衣、假髮、和面具。裙子則是用半透明、彩色的布料做的。
I don’t remember what I was dreaming about, but I remember the colours: light, soft, cheerful colours and jet black.
Therefore I designed a costume where the actor would be in a full black leotard, black wig, and black mask/face veil. The costume, however, would be made with see through material of colourful, light fabric.

幾何 Geometry

我看著一幅畫裡的女孩,她身旁有很多矩形和圓圈。這個夢讓我想起立體主義,所以我設計了一件有結構的幾何服裝。舞台也用幾何形狀設計。
I was looking at a drawing of a girl in a dress with rectangles and circles all around her. The dream reminded me of Cubism, and so I designed a structured costume of geometric shapes. The set would also be of geometric shapes.

描邊的《裡面的生命》 Outline The Life Inside

在夢裡,我正要在我的畫上簽名,但我找不到對的簽字筆。這個夢提醒我簽字筆和描邊對我的畫的重要性。我決定用完成與未完成這個想法設計《裡面的生命》。死去的女孩有描邊但沒有上色;她的家人完全上色與描邊;其他人則只是大概的鉛筆構圖。
In the dream, I was going to sign my name on a drawing, but I couldn’t find the right black marker. This dream reminded me of the importance of markers and outlining in my drawings. I decided to design The Life Inside with the concept of completed and uncompleted looks. The dead girl is outlined but uncoloured; her family is fully outlines and coloured; everyone else is roughly pencil sketched.
